JOSEPHINE MILLS - THIS IS LOVE [REVIEW - WYAT]

(Orleans)

Josephine mills' promising debut "This Is Love" showcases this talented young vocalist in a versatile set of contemporary R&B and soulful pop music that reaches far beyond Crescent City confines in an attempt to appeal to a national audience. Mills steps up from her role as background singer for Allen Toussaint to take her turn in the spotlight performing her own material. The first rate production adds just the right flavor, whether embellishing the natural lushness of Josephine Mills' silky voice or setting off contrasting textures, effects and emotions. Pianist Willie Tee lays a solid old-school foundation enhanced by various instrumentation including horns and some well placed guitar work. Traces of Natalie Cole, Faith Evans and Aretha Franklin are evidenced in the budding promise of "This Is Love."
